NEEM OIL SPRAY DIRECTIONS

Step 1: The Recipe (Making Your Spray)

Since oil and water don’t mix easily, you need a little soap to help the Neem Oil dissolve (this is called an emulsifier).

Ingredient Amount (for 1 Liter / 1 Quart spray bottle) Amount (for 1 Gallon sprayer)
Warm Water 1 Liter (approx. 4 cups) 1 Gallon
Pure, Cold-Pressed Neem Oil 1 teaspoon 1–2 tablespoons
Mild Liquid Soap (like Castile soap or a mild dish soap) 1/3 teaspoon 1–2 teaspoons
  1. Warm the Water: Start with slightly warm water (not hot) as this helps the Neem Oil mix better.
  2. Add Soap: Pour the mild liquid soap into your warm water. Swirl gently to mix.
  3. Add Neem Oil: Slowly pour the Neem Oil into the soapy water mixture.
  4. Mix Well: Pour the solution into your spray bottle or garden sprayer and shake vigorously. You must shake the sprayer often while applying to keep the oil and water from separating.

Step 2: When to Spray

Timing is crucial to protect your plants and beneficial insects.

What to Do Why
Spray in the Evening or Early Morning Applying in the heat of the day or direct sun can cause the oil to burn the leaves. This timing also helps protect beneficial insects and bees, which are usually less active at these times.
Check the Weather Avoid spraying if rain is expected within 24 hours, as it will wash the treatment away before it can work effectively.

Test First Always test on a small section of a leaf and wait 24 hours for any sign of damage (like yellowing or burning) before spraying the entire plant. Young or stressed plants can be more sensitive.

Step 3: How to Apply

Thorough coverage is key for pest control.

  1. Target All Areas: Pests often hide and lay eggs on the undersides of leaves. Be sure to completely coat all parts of the plant, including the tops and bottoms of the leaves, as well as the stems and branches.
  2. Spray until Wet: Spray the plant until the solution is just about to drip off.

Step 4: Maintenance

Be patient, and follow a regular schedule.

Schedule Purpose
For Active Infestations: Apply once a week (every 7 days) until the pests are gone.
For Prevention: Apply every 10–14 days to keep pests from establishing a foothold.
After Use: Mix a fresh batch every time you spray. The Neem Oil mixture loses its effectiveness quickly once mixed with water, so do not store the leftover solution.

Important Safety Note

  • Follow Product Label: Always check the label of your specific Neem Oil product for any special instructions or mixing ratios, as concentrations can vary.
  • Harvesting: Neem oil is generally safe to use on fruits and vegetables, but always wash your produce thoroughly before eating.
  • Storage: Store your concentrated Neem Oil in a cool, dark place.
