Premium Natural Volcanic Pumice Stone (Coarse Grade)
Improve drainage, boost root aeration, and create healthier growing conditions with our Premium Natural Volcanic Pumice Stone. Formed from rapidly cooled volcanic lava, pumice is an exceptionally lightweight, porous volcanic rock containing thousands of microscopic air pockets. Its permanent structure allows it to retain moisture while maintaining excellent airflow around plant roots, making it one of the most valuable inorganic growing media for both hobbyists and professional growers.
Our pumice stones are naturally rounded (tumbled) and carefully selected for their high porosity, durability, and cleanliness. Unlike organic soil amendments, pumice does not decompose, compact, or lose its effectiveness over time, providing long-lasting improvement to any growing medium.

Why Choose Volcanic Pumice?
Unlike perlite, bark, or organic soil amendments, volcanic pumice maintains its structure for many years. It continues to provide excellent drainage and aeration without floating, decomposing, or compacting, making it a reliable and sustainable choice for both professional horticulture and home gardening.
Usage Tips
- Rinse before first use to remove any residual dust from handling and transport.
- Mix with potting soil according to your plant’s drainage requirements.
- Can also be used as a standalone drainage layer or decorative surface mulch.
- Crush to size for cactus, succulent, bonsai, orchid, and aroid potting mixes.
Whether you’re growing bonsai, orchids, succulents, tropical houseplants, or improving outdoor garden soil, our Premium Natural Volcanic Pumice Stone delivers long-lasting drainage, aeration, and root health for stronger, healthier plants.
Pumice stones measuring 0.75–2.75 inches (2–7 cm) are considered coarse and are generally too large to mix directly into the potting soil of small cactus, succulent, or bonsai pots. However, they can still be very useful with the right approach.
🌵 For Small Cactus & Succulent Pots (3–8 inches)
Crush into Smaller Pieces
For most small pots, break the larger pumice into smaller particles before mixing.
Ideal particle size:
- 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4 inch): Seedlings and mini succulents
- 6–12 mm (1/4–1/2 inch): Most cacti and succulents
- 12–18 mm (1/2–3/4 inch): Large specimens
Suggested soil mix:
- 30–50% crushed pumice
- Remaining portion: cactus/succulent potting mix, coarse sand, lava rock, etc.
Decorative Top Dressing
Use the larger stones as a top dressing.
Benefits:
- Gives a premium, natural appearance
- Prevents soil erosion while watering
- Keeps cactus stems away from constantly moist soil
- Helps reduce fungus gnats
- Reduces evaporation from the soil surface
🌳 For Bonsai
Decorative Surface Layer
Place 1–3 larger stones on the soil surface around the trunk.
Benefits:
- Creates a natural landscape appearance
- Helps stabilize moss
- Reduces soil splash during watering
- Adds visual interest
Break into Bonsai Aggregate
Bonsai generally performs best with smaller aggregate.
Recommended size:
- 3–10 mm depending on tree size
Mix with materials such as:
- Akadama
- Lava rock
- Crushed pumice
For Small Indoor Plants (Aroids, Philodendron, Anthurium)
The full-size stones are usually too large for small pots.
Instead:
- Break them into 10–15 mm pieces for chunky aroid mixes.
- Reserve the largest pieces for large Monstera or mature Anthuriums.
💡 Drainage Layer? Think Carefully
Although many gardeners place stones at the bottom of pots, modern horticultural research generally discourages using a drainage layer inside containers, as it can create a perched water table, keeping moisture higher in the soil instead of improving drainage.
Instead:
- Use a well-draining potting mix throughout the entire pot.
- Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes.
- If you use large pumice pieces, they’re better suited as a decorative top dressing or incorporated into the mix after crushing.
🔨 How to Crush Large Pumice Safely
Because pumice is lightweight and brittle, it’s easy to reduce to the desired size.
- Place the stones inside a sturdy canvas bag or thick cloth sack.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.
- Strike gently with a hammer until the desired size is achieved.
- Sieve the crushed material to separate different grades.
- Rinse to remove dust before use.
📏 Recommended Uses by Size
