Acetamiprid 20 SP is a systemic neonicotinoid insecticide used mainly against sucking and piercing insects.
- 20 SP = 20% active ingredient in Soluble Powder form
- Chemical group: Neonicotinoid
- Highly effective for aphids, whiteflies, thrips, jassids, leaf miners
- Widely used in vegetables, fruits, cotton, ornamentals, and commercial farming
Benefits in Gardening
A) Excellent control of sucking pests
It works exceptionally well against:
- aphids
- whiteflies
- thrips
- jassids
- leaf hoppers
- mealybugs
- leaf miners
- psyllids
These pests cause:
- curling leaves
- yellowing
- stunted growth
- poor flowering
- fruit drop
- virus transmission
Acetamiprid helps prevent all of these.
B) Systemic action
After spraying, the plant absorbs it through leaves and stems.
It then moves through plant sap (xylem/phloem tissues), so insects die even when feeding on hidden plant parts.
C) Long residual protection
Usually provides 7–14 days protection, depending on rain, crop type, and pest pressure.
D) Fast knockdown
Visible pest reduction often starts within 6–24 hours.
E) Better crop yield
By reducing sap-sucking insects, plants maintain:
- better photosynthesis
- better flowering
- improved fruit set
- higher production
General Application Rate
The most common agricultural recommendation:
Per liter of water
0.25–0.5 gram per liter
For 15-liter knapsack sprayer
4–8 grams per 15 liters
Per acre
Usually 20–40 grams per acre
Can vary by crop and infestation severity.
Best Method / Practice to Use It:
Best spraying time
Spray during:
- early morning
- late afternoon / evening
Avoid strong sunlight.
Spray technique
Spray both:
- upper leaf surface
- lower leaf surface
This is extremely important because whiteflies and aphids stay underneath leaves.
Mixing method
- Fill sprayer half with water
- Add measured powder
- Mix thoroughly
- Fill remaining water
- Spray immediately
Best practice
Use a spreader/sticker for better adhesion.
Precautions During Application
Important safety measures:
- wear gloves
- use face mask
- wear long sleeves
- avoid skin contact
- avoid inhalation
- do not eat or smoke during spraying
- wash hands after use
- keep away from children
- keep away from ponds/fish tanks
Acetamiprid is toxic to beneficial insects, especially bees during flowering.
Suitable Crops + Application Rates
| Crop | Target Pest | Rate |
| Tomato | whitefly, aphid, thrips | 0.3–0.5 g/L |
| Chili | thrips, aphid | 0.3–0.5 g/L |
| Brinjal | jassid, whitefly | 0.3–0.5 g/L |
| Okra | aphid, jassid | 0.3–0.4 g/L |
| Cabbage | aphid | 0.25–0.4 g/L |
| Cotton | jassid, whitefly | 20–40 g/acre |
| Citrus | psyllid, aphid | 0.4–0.5 g/L |
| Rose / Flowers | aphid, thrips | 0.25–0.4 g/L |
Effectiveness:
Effectiveness
Under correct application:
85–95% effectiveness
For soft-bodied sucking pests:
up to 95%
Rating
9/10
Excellent against aphids and whiteflies.
Toxicity
This is difficult to express in exact percentage because toxicity depends on organism.
Practical toxicity scale
- Human toxicity: moderate
- Fish: moderate to high
- Bees: high
Toxicity rating
6.5/10
For pests: very toxic
For humans (correct use): moderately toxic
Target Pests
- Aphids
- Whiteflies
- Thrips
- Jassids
- Leaf hoppers
- Mealybugs
- Psyllids
- Leaf miners
- Scale insects
- Fleas (domestic use)
- Cherry fruit fly larvae
Chemical Formula
C₁₀H₁₁ClN₄
Chemical Contents Present
For 20 SP formulation:
- Acetamiprid = 20%
- inert carriers / wetting agents = 80%
Equivalent:
200 g per kg
Shelf Life
Normally:
2 years (24 months)
if stored in cool and dry conditions in sealed pack.
How It Is Made / Produced
Produced by synthetic organic chemistry.
Main industrial steps include:
- chloropyridine ring synthesis
- cyano group addition
- amidine functionalization
- crystallization
- soluble powder formulation
Then blended with:
- dispersants
- wetting agents
- anti-caking fillers
This creates SP powder.
Other Uses Apart from Gardening
- commercial agriculture
- fruit orchards
- tea gardens
- cotton fields
- ornamental nursery plants
- domestic pest control
- flea control in pets
Biology Behind Pest Elimination
Biologically, insects depend on nerve signal transmission.
Acetamiprid binds to insect nerve receptors called:
nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs)
This causes:
- continuous nerve stimulation
- paralysis
- feeding stop
- death
The insect usually stops feeding very quickly.
Chemistry Behind Pest Elimination
Chemically, it acts as a nicotine mimic molecule.
It behaves similarly to nicotine in insects.
It binds strongly with receptor proteins and is not easily broken down immediately.
This causes:
- sodium channel imbalance
- persistent depolarization
- nervous system collapse
Result:
rapid paralysis and death
